The Libertine Hits Theatres

This morning I shipped off a copy of the Brownlee Brothers' / Joe Howes documentary Capturing the Libertine to the Weinstein Company for final approval. This on the eve of the release of The Libertine!

The film's checkered past has followed it all the way to today...evidenced by the fact that after 18 months of delays and pushbacks, not a single theatre in Calgary is showing the film on opening day! Films are extremely challenging to produce under the best of circumstances, but this one has had some amazing obstacles thrown in its path.

If you want the full story, you'll have to rent the DVD when it is released this summer and watch Capturing the Libertine. It's just a total shame all the story we were NOT able to tell in our documentary. The reality of the business is that you have to try to please a LOT of people; The length must be kept in check, certain funny sequences had to go because the English accents would be "beyond an American audience." But in spite of there being far too many cooks in the kitchen, we're awfully pleased with our little film.

It's been an amazing couple of years working on this film. In March of 2004 I went from being a hobbyist to having coffee with John Malkovich on the Isle of Man. I'll be glad to have it behind me, but it's been a great ride and I feel lucky to have been a part of it.

Hey, and the Calgary Herald did an article about it!

StoryLoom Released at NAB 2005

Folding Rain has participated as a technology partner in the development of a cool tape logging tool called StoryLoom

The different editions of StoryLoom make it the ideal tool for anyone building video projects, from parents with a birthday to film, to video hobbyists, to wedding videographers to documentarians, filmmakers and big studios.

Joe Howes of Folding Rain Filmworks has been in Las Vegas for the past week at the NAB show, showing demos and distributing preview release copies of the program. So far the reponse has been extremely positive.

StoryLoom will be available for public download Monday, April 25, 2005 at www.storyloom.com

The Cost of Living

Back in November, Folding Rain participated in the production of a short sci-fi film starring Andrew Krivanek and William B. Davis (of X-Files fame).

The director of this film, Jonathan Joffe, is a brilliant writer and filmmaker. The Cost of Living has been accepted into several film festivals and will likely be showing on Space - The Imagination Station in the coming months.

Folding Rain participated by taking some assets generated by the art department and creating a fully interactive computer interface for the actors to use which ran on a tablet PC. It was a last-minute rush job (as are all film projects), so the pieces were cobbled together very quickly, but it was a pleasure to be on set and watching the actors able to respond to a real interface instead of reacting to a blank screen.

Racing Gears Advance

Folding Rain has just participated in the production of a commercial for video game developer Orbital Media, Inc. Orbital was simply a joy to work with and we'd like to thank Steve, Scott and Mike for their amazing work. I was especially impressed at the ability (and speed!) of Mike, an incredible XSI artist. The spot will appear on Cartoon Network starting Monday, February 28th.

The turnaround on this project was about 1 week -- we did the editing, sound editing, 2D effects, grading, and final mastering. It was remarkably easy given the sexy footage Orbital had generated and their ability to clear permissions and turn around video assets in almost no time was key to getting the spot out so quickly. The final day we set up a little mobile editing suite at Orbital's office next to Mike and cranked out work right up until the very last minute before the digibeta transfer.

And BTW, you should pick up a copy of Racing Gears Advance...really really fun!!

Project 929

Folding Rain is now involved with the production of a television pilot for a sci-fi series called "Project 929". It tells the story of "Sera Micheals", a secret agent who, along with her collegaues, has the ability to split a "RemSym" copy of herself through time and space during certain events. This ability makes for extremely effective and dangerous operatives in the field.

These pictures are from yesterday's rehearsal of a scene where Sera (there in the white shirt played by actor/director Shawna Cox) is being chased and gets hit by a car. An off-duty detective is walking by and rushes to her aid, but when he discovers her weapon they begin to struggle and she has to disarm him and flee.

The rehearsal was at a Dojo in the northeast where they do martial arts and weapons training. Orlando (the guy on the floor) runs the Dojo and is also playing the cop in the scene. He's one of those really-nice-guys-you'd- never-wanna-f$%*-with.

The first shoot for Project 929 is taking place at a few locations in Calgary on Saturday and Sunday.

The show will be pitched to HBO and other networks later this year.

RE:LIB Complete!

Last week the first evaluation masters were sent to Los Angeles and London for approval. I included not only the film but a sample of some of the great DVD extras we have that should really be included when The Libertine is released on DVD.

For example, have you seen Finding Neverland?

There's a scene where J.M. Barry and the boys are licking stamps, putting them on coins and then flipping them up to the roof where the stamp will stick. On the Libertine, there was a great moment on set with Johnny at Stanway House where J.M. Barrie actually lived and worked. Up on the ceiling there were stamps that he himself had actually stuck to the roof 90 years beforehand.

We're hoping that this and the dozens of other great little moments we caught on set will find their way on to the DVD.
